HI – 24hrs ago a sick pigeon was handed to me in my shop – it was outside – unable to fly – weak – skinny and dazed – its a racing pigeon ( i think!) as its got a ring on each leg ? anyway – its a lovely thing —- i have had it in a large cage with newspaper – hay to sleep on and fresh water – I only had some ‘naked’ oats and chicken ***** grain to hand but put some in – he isnt interested – today he is still alive but looks sooo depressed – he is fluffed up – when I touch him he looks ok tho and quiet perky but he is PURE BONE also he has pooped bright green watery poo with a white watery bit in the middle and darker solid center – i cannot afford to start going to the vets over this tho I would if i could – i am happy to hand feed etc the correct stuff but i cannot afford the vet – thankyou! – oh he also shakes his head every now and again like when you have water in your ear ) – there are no animal shelters here to accept birds either ( in country!). thanks X

google bird first aide. Sounds like it is in shock whick is dangerous and no telling what other problems the poor thing has. Keep him warm, I would mioten some of the chicken grain with pediolite or water if you have to, and use a dropper or syringe without a needle to feed. Just do a little at a time and give it time to breath, you can feel when it is full by feeling the crop(kinda where the brest is)

I once found a racing pigeon that had flown inside my garage and couldn’t fly out, I kept it comfortable overnight and rang the RSPCA they came and checked it out they said it wasn’t injured probably shocked, so they took it with them and they said the vet would check to see if it was ok to release and as it had a ring on it’s leg they could inform the owner! Give them a ring! (sorry if this is all spelt funny I can’t find my glasses so I can’t see spell check either!)

i m afraid hes more or less a goner? is his chest bone stuck out like a razor blade? if it is the kindest thing would be to have him put to sleep? i found one in this state the other year ,also ringed, and took it to a bloke who knew all about pigeons? and its his advice i m passing on,not mine? but he said it was a lost cause and put it out of its misery? i hope im wrong, and you get someone else who can advise you differently?good luck?

take it to the vets and hand it in as a stray but say its got a ring on and say it was just handed in to you .There will be no charge as it is not your bird and they will make it beta and try to find the owner .It need a vet because what you said it sounds like the bird may have a infection and watery faeces are not good at all if you don’t get it 2 the vets it will die with a day or two

if you take it to the vets and find the owners it will not be put to slepp i volunteer at a vets and know this does not happen upless the bird can not actually be cured .The bird will pro be but on antibiotic or a probiotic and fed if not eating untill hes or shes beta they do not just put them 2 sleep that would probs only happen if the bird could not fly or walk and surgery would kill it

Ok, first off unless you want him to be killed dont take him to the vets!

When a racing pigeon doesnt return home to where its meant to touch down the owner normally breaks its neck when it finally does get handed back or finds its own way home, This is because they class the bird as no good Cause it hasnt done its job as sad as it is!

I Have racing pidgeons who stop out my back all the time, i end up having to soak them with the hose pipe to get them to fly away, as my aviary birds keep stopping them in there tracks.

Keep him in a warm quiet room, make sure he has access to fresh water, and also do out and buy some pidgeon corn/feed, you can get this at most pet shops, and it only costs a £1 a bag (in the uk)

It sounds like he has been out for a while and hasnt been able to get food, or the owners simply neglected it!

Also ask the pet shop if theres anything else you can give it there might be something on the market which will give it a boost! It shouldnt cost much at all!

But he does need to be feed up try searching internet in keeping pidgoens you should find something

I can almost guarantee that the bird has coccidiosis. Water with sulfmethazine or other sulf drug or amprolium will help cure that (I’m not listing proprietary names since you need the chemical one to find it locally. (While it’s possible he has paramyxovirus — the liklihood is cocci) (Neither are transmissable to humans)

As for food – keep him on a scant diet for now — cocci sort of causes something like extreme diarrhea in humans (it’s a bacterial infection of the intestines) If you’re in the states you can often find a premixed formulation for cocci at stores that sell supplies for budgies (otherwise go to a pet or feed store and ask about the sulfamethazine or amprolium)

It’s your best shot — you might also check the ring (Band) number on the leg to find the owner’s club

give him some sugary water, not too sugary though! and by that i mean get a pet bowl fill with water and put about a teaspoon of white sugar in it. It will get his energy up quicker
