Racing Pigeons – A little Known Sport

If there was ever an under-appreciated sport out there, its definitely the sport of racing pigeons.

I mean, there are a lot of bird watching groups, and other bird related hobby groups out there, but pigeon racing is definitely unique.

What is Pigeon Racing?

Well, exactly what it sounds like, really. But the thing with pigeons is that fact that pigeons can travel huge distances at once, and stay on course. They can also fly up to 60mph, no problem.

Many individuals use them as homing pigeons, to carry messages or small items from one location to the next. But that’s getting off the point…

Now, in order to race pigeons, they need to be exercised properly, and just like any other animal, they need to be trained. In fact, they have to be trained, so that they don’t fly away!

How do you get into Pigeon Racing?

First off, you need a pigeon of course! The best place is to look for pigeons that are for sale, then go ahead and buy one (or some) from a certified pigeon breeder, to buy young birds.

If you want to buy winning pigeons already, that may a great start as well. make sure you find out how old the bird is first, before the purchase is made. You should also verify that the owner has won races before you buy it.

Also, you may hear something that is known as “eye sign” but this doesn’t necessarily mean that the pigeon is a good racer, so don’t base everything on that item alone.

Probably the best way to learn about the sport is pick up a pigeon racing guide.
