How much is a racing pigeon worth?

pigeon racing
Charlotte H asked:

The bloke a few doors down owns about 15 racing pigeons but my cat killed one and ate it. He doesn’t know it was anything to do with my cat, but I was just wondering how much one racing pigeon is worth if he ever did find out about it and made me pay.

Just curious :)

Sorry. I really don’t know. I tried racing pigeons once, I got very fit, but I could never beat them.

Who cares. Refuse to pay. If he ever tries to take ya to court…just claim that there is no way your cat killed his racing pigeon. If so, then that pigeon obviously wasn’t a good racer and is worth no more than a buck.

a pigeon fancier doesnt really put a price on a single bird…it all depends on the breed, how many races its run and even how good the bird is at brining the others back to the loft…i wouldnt mention it..honest,some can be very proctective …my day once threw a throwing axe at a bloke who stoll on of his birds..it missed like, but he got the idea.

From nothing, some guys will give you some young ones to start you off,to about $100 for a young one with a good bloodline to thousands for top breeding stock. No matter your cat killed a pigeon natural thing to do do not worry about it

They can be from just a few dollars to hundreds of thousands. The average racer is about $30-$60. A good pigeon owner is patient and understands that things like that are out of his or your control and can happen. But, just in case, try to keep your cat away from his pigeons next time, or you could be paying him quite a fee.

Most people don’t realize how expensive these birds can get, and how much they end up being worth. Average racing pigeons may be around $20-$50, but that’s without any extra special bloodlines, strains, or pedigrees. The more money the fancier has, and the more serious he is about racing….the higher up the price is. Everyone wants the best birds…and the best birds can get up into the thousands. There has been a champion bird go for a quarter of a million dollars. I have one bird in my breeding stock right now worth AT LEAST $3,000 and another from the same loft worth around $2,500. I also have one that’s worth a good bit…not sure how much exactly, but one of it’s grandparents won $19,000 in a race along with countless other good things in it’s pedigree, so it’s worth a good bit. Needless to say, these birds have a lot of champion blood in them. If they raise a lot of really big winners, then they’re price can go even higher. All of this is just a price based on ancestry, quality, and achievements though. Even if your neighbor didn’t pay hundreds of dollars for his birds, he has put that much into them. Not only did he build the loft, buy the supplies, and buy the birds, but he RACES his homers…which means he has also put a lot of time and hardwork into his birds. Not to mention he probably cares a lot for them. One bird being killed by your cat could cost a lot to him…it may have been his best bird, therefore making all of his time, money and work worthless. It isn’t any different than any other pet, or animal bred for competition such as race horses and race dogs. It’s the guys property if you think about it, and your cat ate it.
Go to his house and talk to him. Ask him about his racing pigeons and about how much they are worth and how much it takes to take care of them like you are actually interested. That will get you on his good side most likely. Then politely tell him that you found your cat had eaten one of his birds, and that you are very sorry. He might not make you pay for his bird. It isn’t completely your fault the cat found a way to catch a bird…he should have been watching them or had better protection against predators. I will say that you in turn, should keep an eye on your cat sometimes too. Whatever you do, you need to tell him what has happened and apologize. What if you raised your cat from a tiny kitten and cared a lot for it (or if the cat was…exotic or something and was worth a lot of money) and your neighbor’s dog chewed it up? Wouldn’t you like to know what the crap happened to it? And get an apology? It’s the right thing to do…no matter how low you may think racing pigeons is.

    Good luck!
